CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Come, children of God, let us step out of fear and into the light of His presence. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear!
People: We have received the Spirit of adoption! By Him, we cry out, "Abba! Father!"
Leader: The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirits that we are children of God—and if children, then heirs. Heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.
People: We come to share in His glory, acknowledging that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed to us.
Leader: Look around us; the entire creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God. The earth groans in labor pains, longing to be set free from its bondage to decay.
People: And we, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption, the redemption of our bodies.
Leader: For in this hope we were saved. We do not despair over what is broken; we look forward to what is promised.
All: If we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Come, Holy Spirit, fill our worship and renew our hearts! Amen.
*Hymn 363 And Can It Be That I Should Gain+
1 And can it be that I should gain
an interest in the Savior's blood!
Died He for me, who caused his pain!
For me? who him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be
that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Amazing love! How can it be
that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
2. 'Tis mystery all: th'Immortal dies!
Who can explore his strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries
to sound the depths of love divine.
'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore;
let angel minds inquire no more.
'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore;
let angel minds inquire no more.
3. He left his Father's throne above,
(so free, so infinite his grace!)
emptied himself of all but love,
and bled for Adam's helpless race.
'Tis mercy all, immense and free,
for, O my God, it found out me!
'Tis mercy all, immense and free,
for, O my God, it found out me!
4. Long my imprisoned spirit lay,
fast bound in sin and nature's night;
thine eye diffused a quickening ray;
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
my chains fell off, my heart was free;
I rose, went forth, and followed thee.
my chains fell off, my heart was free;
I rose, went forth, and followed thee.
5. No condemnation now I dread,
Jesus, and all in him, is mine;
alive in him, my living Head,
and clothed in righteousness divine,
bold I approach th'eternal throne,
and claim the crown, through Christ my own.
bold I approach th'eternal throne,
and claim the crown, through Christ my own.
WORDS: Charles Wesley, 1739 MUSIC: Thomas Campbell, 1835

*HYMN 534 Be Still, My Soul+
1 Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
leave to your God to order and provide;
in every change God faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: your best, your heavenly friend
through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
2 Be still, my soul: your God will undertake
to guide the future, as in ages past.
Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake;
all now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
the Christ who ruled them while he dwelt below.
3 Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
when we shall be forever with the Lord,
when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
sorrow forgot, love's purest joy restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past,
all safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

PRAYER HYMN 369 Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine+
1. Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long;
this is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.
2. Perfect submission, perfect delight,
visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
angels descending bring from above
echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long;
this is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.
3. Perfect submission, all is at rest;
I in my Savior am happy and blest,
watching and waiting, looking above,
filled with his goodness, lost in his love.
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long;
this is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.

PRAYER OF INTERCESSION and THE LORD’S PRAYER.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven:
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory,
For ever and ever. Amen.

*HYMN OF SENDING FORTH 196 Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus+
Come, thou long expected Jesus,
born to set thy people free;
from our fears and sins release us,
let us find our rest in thee.
Israel's strength and consolation,
hope of all the earth thou art;
dear desire of every nation,
joy of every longing heart.
2. Born thy people to deliver,
born a child and yet a King,
born to reign in us forever,
now thy gracious kingdom bring.
By thine own eternal spirit
rule in all our hearts alone;
by thine all sufficient merit,
raise us to thy glorious throne.

A Prayer of Lament on Recent Immigration Enforcement Actions
from Bishop Tom Berlin
God of mercy, compassion, and hope,
We come before you with heavy hearts in these painful and troubling days. In Maine and Houston, lives were taken after ICE agents shot individuals during vehicle stops. In St. Augustine, a young man died in a moment of fear and flight during an encounter with ICE and Homeland Security Investigations officers. We grieve these deaths, and we grieve the systems and decisions that have brought so much sorrow in recent months.
We pray also for the driver of the semi-truck in St. Augustine, who was suddenly caught in this tragedy and sought to render aid. Bring healing to his spirit and peace for the trauma he now carries.
We lift before you those who mourn: spouses, children, family members, and friends whose lives have been forever changed. Be near to communities living in fear and uncertainty. Hold close all whose lives have been marked by these events.
O God, hear our cry. Move our nation's leaders, especially members of Congress, to act with wisdom and compassion for the sake of those who are vulnerable. We pray especially for our Haitian neighbors in Florida, that Temporary Protected Status may be secured so families are not forced to return to conditions of profound instability.
May our grief not end in sorrow alone. Stir us to faithful action. Move us to contact our representatives in Congress, to bear witness to our concern, to call for careful inquiry into these deaths, and to advocate for the protection and care of our Haitian neighbors.
Under the Lordship of Christ, grant us hearts of compassion, courage to seek justice, and the peace of Christ to sustain all who suffer.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
